Engineering Council

The Engineering Council is the UK regulatory body for the engineering profession. We hold the national registers of 235,000 Engineering Technicians (EngTech), Information and Communications Technology Technicians (ICTTech), Incorporated Engineers (IEng) and Chartered Engineers (CEng).

In addition, the Engineering Council sets and maintains the internationally recognised standards of professional competence and ethics that govern the award and retention of these titles. This ensures that employers, government and wider society – both in the UK and overseas – can have confidence in the knowledge, experience and commitment of registrants.

As the UK’s national academy for engineering, RAEng seeks to bring together the most successful and talented engineers from across the engineering sectors for a shared purpose: to advance and promote excellence in engineering. It provides analysis and policy support to promote the UK’s role as a great place from which to do business, working to improve public awareness and understanding of engineering. The Academy’s work programmes for 2011 to 2015 are driven by four strategic challenges, each of which seeks to provide a key contribution to a strong and vibrant engineering sector and to the health and wealth of society: to drive faster and more balanced economic growth, to foster better education and skills, to lead the profession and to promote engineering at the heart of society. We work closely with RAEng in a number of areas, not least in its objective to “foster better education and skills”, particularly through our membership of Education for Engineering.
